What can we learn from the Obama campaign?

Are there lessons designers, especially web designers, can learn regarding building a sustainable brand from the ground up?

What started as a “grass-roots” campaign utilizing social media, emerging technology and traditional media emerged as a carefully groomed, carefully controlled message…Elect Barack Obama as President of the United States.

How did it happen? Why did it happen? Your opinions please!

    How and why did it happen? It was a very close race, but basically it was a culmanation of many factors. Yes, the media image was very good, but I think the overwhelming factor is that it is historical having Obama as president. The times were right for a democratic president to be elected, but so were they when Gore lost. What is the difference? Could we say hope? The needed votes were brought out of the woodwork by hope and the fact that it is history being made. I think African Americans see this differently than I do. I am proud that we have come to the place where Obama can be elected, but i think it is much bigger for African Americans. I can see it on their face and hear it in their voice when they talk about it. I hope this is healing for our nation.

    I have wondered for years why the ones who suffer the most don’t unify and vote. The answer is that they had no hope and besides they were too busy just trying to keep body and soul together. The ‘haves’ had the time to organize and the know-how to win the elections. This time, ‘the people’ saw themselves up there running for office and saw people they admired like Oprah, P Diddy, hip hop stars, etc talking about voting.

    I’m sure the image portrayed of a young, modern, strong man played a large part in winning some over. Obama has a positive presence. His first radio chat was done through the internet. He used text messages and email in his campaign. His opponent admited to not knowing how to use email. Obama is current and that is important to young America. Obama met the people where they are in this technology driven time.

    As web designers that is a good thing to keep in mind. We have to meet our target audience where they are living and in a meaningful way to them. We need to have a message they are looking for whether it be ‘have hope’ or ‘buy me for younger skin’. We need to be current, positive and strong.

    I think there are many ways to learn from Obama’s campaign. The first thing is that the nation has a new image. We are more diverse than ever before, which makes the nation more beautiful with colors.

    I believe we can learn from Obama’s campaign because when a brand or image is set, everything else falls into place. Obama’s campaign targeted groups, mainly the younger audience and middle class. He set out an image that reached out to this crowd of individuals and won his election by doing so. It was really smart of to do because the younger audience and middle class is what makes up most of this country. This concept really works well with designing because your image must be able to speak itself, rather than defend. When you have a client, you must understand what they want and exceed their expectations.
